There is growing interest in developing a systematic scientific basis for design in computer science, especially for software.
NSF Research Community
The Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate of the National Science Foundation supports a program of research in Science of Design.
Peter Freeman presented his vision for the program in CRN in 2004. With David Hart, he elaborated this in CommACM
About two dozen projects were funded in the first round (2005) and about 40 more were funded in the second round (2006). The Summary of Awards shows their scope
The program announcementfor the next round of funding is available from NSF. Full Proposal Deadline Date: February 5, 2007.
A Meeting of the Science of Design Principal Investigators was held in Washington DC February 28-March 2, 2007. Summaries of the discussions are online.
A Symposium on the Science of Design is being held at Humboldt University March 22-34, 2007.
